Did you know that you can identify the county,
township, section all the way down to the actual parcel from the Tax ID number?
We'll explain how on this page and give you the county numeric codes and numeric
taxing authority unit codes.
Each position in the Tax ID number has
significance as follows. The first two digits of the number identify the county.
For example 80 is the county number for Van Buren county. The next two or three
digits represent the taxing authority unit (Township, Village, City). The number
of digits representing the tax authority unit (two digits or three digits)
varies from county to county. To continue with the example, 46 (or 046)
represents the Village of Mattawan. With this information, a Tax ID number
beginning with 8046xxxxxxxx tells you the county is Van Buren and
the taxing authority is the Village of Mattawan. The next three digits are the
section or subdivision number, while the last five digits are the parcel
identification number.
